Peruvian newspaper pays tribute to Fidel Castro and Tomás Borge

Lima, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Peru's Uno newspaper paid tribute on Sunday to the 97th birthday of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and Nicaraguan revolutionary Tomás Borge, whom it described as great Latin American figures.

The tribute, motivated by their coincidental birth, occupied a front page of the newspaper and bears the signature of journalist Gustavo Espinoza, former congressman, social fighter and international solidarity activist.

The article notes that Fidel Castro and Tomás Borge, in addition to being revolutionaries, “founded their own movements, sought independent paths and built new development models for their peoples.”

“They passed on to posterity, gathering the will to fight of millions, and they had the satisfaction of having done their duty,” the publication added.

When reviewing the biography of the Cuban leader, after the revolutionary victory of 1959, his life was “a succession of battles; all undertaken in the supreme desire to serve the interests of his people” and for this reason, he faced the most powerful and cruel enemies, the large corporations and the empire.

The article added that, with the heroism of his people, Fidel achieved one by one all his objectives, including the freedom of five Cuban heroes unjustly held in prisons in the United States for more than 15 years.

“Fidel went down in history as an ideologue, a revolutionary, a statesman, an exemplary combatant, a legendary figure” with Latin American and global projections, Espinoza said.

On the other hand, he highlighted the struggle of Tomás Borge as one of the founders of Nicaragua’s Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), a struggle that he defined as a long chain of horror and violence, of tireless struggle but also of death and torture.

He added that in that fight, “Tomás was a survivor, he spent a long time in prison, he was hooded and shackled but he never allowed himself to be subdued,” and after the victory he assumed government functions that he fulfilled in an exemplary manner.

“Tomás Borge was a minister, writer, politician and diplomat. However, above all, he was a man of open combat, with defined ideas, his own profiles” and noble principles, lofty projects, deep-rooted convictions, he highlights.

Espinoza pointed out that the struggles of the peoples of Our America are part of a future legacy in which the names of Fidel Castro and Tomás Borge will shine with their own brilliance.
