Cubans honor Fidel Castro

Havana, Aug 13 (Prensa Latina) Cubans on Sunday are paying tribute to the historic leader Fidel Castro, who was the architect of the Revolution and the renewal programs for Cuba and the continent, on his 97th birthday.

Many events are taking place nationwide to recall his legacy. All sectors of society are commemorating the date, as Fidel was not only one of the most influential politicians in the 20th and 21st centuries, but also paid attention to every aspect of development zealously.

Fidel, as he is fondly remembered, was born in Birán, a town in eastern Cuba, in 1926 and became a giant for Cuba and the world with his thoughts, actions, concepts, and ideas that marked his validity.

After graduating as a lawyer from the University of Havana, he always defended and advocated for the welfare of those in need, and to dignify their lives, he later developed his program of social justice.

Fidel led the July 26 Movement, one of the most influential insurgent movements in Latin America, in the 1950s.

He organized the attack on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrisons in Santiago de Cuba and Bayamo, respectively. Although the attackers failed to take either of the two fortresses, the action marked the beginning of the following phase, which included exile, clandestine struggle, the landing of the Granma yacht, the armed struggle, and the triumph of the Revolution in 1959. The Cuban Revolution, led by Fidel, challenged the United States as a model of resistance and achieved exemplary models of free education, health care, and international cooperation in those sectors, as well as achievements in culture, sports, science, technology, and other sectors.

As a founder of the first Socialist State in the Western Hemisphere, the Cuban leader designed a foreign policy of independence, promoted the struggle against the unjust world economic order, and advocated solidarity among the oppressed.

He was a tireless fighter for unity and integration in the region, participating in the founding of mechanisms such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), Petrocaribe, the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).

In 2006, the then-president announced the temporary delegation of his responsibilities as leader of Government, the Communist Party (PCC), and the Revolutionary Armed Forces for health reasons.

Although he recovered from his illness, he did not resume his posts due to other health complications, but he followed the coming changes from his reflections published in local media.

Fidel Castro passed away in Havana on November 25, 2016, at the age of 90. He would be 97 years old on Sunday, and although he is not physically present, he continues to inspire the struggle for sovereignty and anti-imperialism worldwide.
