Guterres calls for more opportunities for young people on their day

United Nations, Aug 12 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, today asked governments for more opportunities for the new generations in his message on International Youth Day.

The celebration this year, with the motto Green skills for young people: towards a sustainable world, recalls the importance of ensuring that this sector acquires and applies skills in the so-called green economy.

“From innovative sustainable technologies and renewable energy to revolutions in transport systems and industrial activity, young people must be equipped with the skills and knowledge to shape a cleaner, greener and more climate resilient future,” the text adds.

In the judgment of the head of the UN, humanity depends on the energy, ideas and unlimited contributions of youth everywhere.

“Today and every day, let’s support young people in shaping a just and sustainable world, for people and the planet,” the statement added.

According to United Nations statistics, 67 percent of people believe in a better future, with young people between the ages of 15 and 17 being the most optimistic about it.

The change towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is essential not only to respond to the global climate crisis, but also to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), recently recalled a statement from the organization.

The success of these efforts will depend to a large extent on the development of healthier environmental competencies in the population, particularly in the newer ones.

Currently, this sector includes 1.2 billion people between the ages of 15 and 24, which represents 16 percent of the world population.
