UN welcomes agreement with Syria to transfer humanitarian aid

United Nations, Aug 9 (Prensa Latina) United Nations Secretary General António Guterres welcomed the agreement between the UN and the Government of Syria to use the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for humanitarian purposes for another six months.

According to a statement, the agreement between the Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths, and the Syrian Government for the UN and its partners to continue to provide cross-border humanitarian support will allow millions of people in need in northwestern Syria to receive vital humanitarian assistance.

Under the agreement, assistance will be provided on the necessary scale and will be based on principles that allow compromising with all parties to seek humanitarian access and safeguard the operational independence of the UN.

The extension of the use of the Bab al-Hawa pass will allow maintaining the shipment of humanitarian aid from the United Nations through Türkiye.

Guterres expressed satisfaction with the authorization for the humanitarian use of the Bab al-Salam and Al-Ra’ee border crossings for three more months, as well as more supply lines inside Syria, in Sarmada and Saraqib, for the delivery assistance in the next six months.
