The Chinese Foreign Ministry reiterated concern due to Tokyo’s idea to release treated radioactive water into the ocean and “leave the world at risk of nuclear pollution.”
The secure elimination of treated contaminated water “depends on a responsible attitude and an exhaustive assessment based on science and not advertising campaigns,” the Ministry pointed out.
“Unfortunately, Japan has not paid attention to legitimate concerns and several sectors’ opposition in the last two years and more and has denied discussing other elimination methods that could be safer while insisting on releasing treated contaminated water this summer,” it stressed.
China urged Japan not to decide in advance and discuss all possible options.
Recently, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) gave the go-ahead to Japan’s plan to release radioactive water, indicating it complies with international standards and does not represent a health risk factor.
