Paraguay’s Liberal Party removes its president

Asuncion, Aug 7 (Prensa Latina) The Authentic Radical Liberal Party (PLRA) of Paraguay started has a new leader on Monday, Hugo Fleitas, who was elected during a rarefied Convention that dismissed the former president of the organization, Efraín Alegre, by a majority vote.

The extraordinary meeting, described as “accidental” by local media, insisted on replacing the former presidential candidate, despite his attempt to avoid his removal by closing the session unilaterally and leaving the meeting, which continued by decision of the rest of the legislators, according to the newspaper Última Hora.

According to the results of the election, 319 of 527 legislators voted against Alegre, whose political career had earlier received a mortal blow when he lost for the third time in an election, this time on April 30, to his Colorado Party opponent, Santiago Peña, who will take office on August 15 as president of the new government.

The voting, chaired in Alegre’s absence by the vice president of the Convention, Miguel Abdón Saguier, included four abstentions and two votes in favor of a proposal to keep the president, but after the renewal of the political leadership of the Party.

On social networks, Alegre justified his action of closing the session by claiming an alleged “illegality” of the Convention when it proposed his dismissal, a measure which he described as “an attempt to steal the institutionality of the PLRA.”
