Ultimatum deadline raises questions for Niger

Niamey, Aug 6 (Prensa Latina) No preparations in particular seem to be taking place in the capital of Niger despite the fact that the ultimatum of the Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) for the reinstatement of ousted Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum expires today.

According to the most recent reports, the military chiefs of the ECOWAS member countries have a plan for an armed intervention in Niger if the perpetrators of the military coup on July 26th refuse to lay down their arms and release the president.

The decision of the entity and the deadline were adopted on July 30th, and the announcement raised the hackles of the governments of Guinea Conakry, Mali, Burkina Faso And Algeria, which said would stand side by side Niger.

The four aforementioned countries warned that they will consider any aggression against Niger as a declaration of war against them, which would give the crisis a regional dimension.

In the last few hours, the Chadian authorities said they were against any forceful action against the new administration of Niger.

The situation in Niger is tangentially related to the war in Ukraine, triggered by a dynamic from Western powers to gather African support to the detriment of Russia, although so far with meager results.

Faced with this complex, increasingly convoluted scenario, all that remains is to watch how things unravel, and if the situation continues complicating as new characters appear.
