On Friday, David MacDonald, the specialist´s auctioneer, said that the belongings will be exhibited to the public for the first time in a month and that they have conceived the spaces of their gallery to give an idea of what it was like to live in Freddie’s residence.
If he were to walk in, he would instantly recognize some of the rooms we have created, MacDonald added.
The sale of the rock icon’s black Yamaha half-grand piano is estimated at between two and three million pounds, and is the instrument he composed Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975.
It was an extension of himself, his vehicle for creativity, Mary Austin, another Sotheby’s expert, said of the piano.
He never smoked by the piano or rested a glass on it, and he made sure no one else did. The piano was always spotless, added Austin, who since Mercury’s death in 1991 has been in charge of organizing and preserving all the objects, handwritten lyrics, artwork and personal items at the institution.
Among other items for sale are: the crown and royal cape that Mercury wore at the end of concerts during the Queen’s last tour in 1986, with God Save The Queen, which are expected to be sold for between 60,000 and 80,000 pounds.
From Friday, the artist’s fans will enjoy a replica of his London home, Garden Lodge, where his private and artistic arsenal is already on display.
Also, the September bidding will include a silver comb or the handwritten lyrics of We Are The Champions.
