Chinese province evacuates over a million people affected by rains

Beijing, Aug 5 (Prensa Latina) The northern Chinese province of Hebei evacuated more than 1.54 million people due to heavy rains in recent days, local authorities reported.

According to the provincial headquarters of flood control and drought relief, more than 2.22 million people in 883 cities and municipalities in 98 county-level regions were affected by heavy rainfall associated with Typhoon Doksuri.

The Chinese government announced the day before a new recovery funding package for the northern Tianjin-Hebei-Beijing region, amounting to 450 million yuan (US$63 million).

The country’s top leadership had previously allocated 110 million yuan (about $15.43 million) to support flood rescue efforts in the northern region.

In addition, the Ministry of Finance allocated 842 million yuan (more than $117 million) to disaster prevention and mitigation funds for the agricultural and water resources sectors in 12 regions at the provincial level, including Hebei.

While this is happening in the north, China remains on alert as Typhoon Khanun, the sixth typhoon this year, moves northeastward in the East Sea of China.
