The events took place on August 4 of that year in a downtown area of this city, presumably due to errors in the handling of explosives, which caused the death of young Guantanameros Enrique Rodriguez, Fabio Rosell and Abelardo Cuza.
In the following hours of the tragedy, two other members of that clandestine insurgent group were pursued and murdered by hired assassins of dictator Fulgencio Batista (1952-1958): Jesús Martín (Holguín, north of Oriente) and Gustavo Fraga, (Matanzas, in the west).
Motivated by that historical fact, the pilgrimage of AHS artists and citizens from the city center to the Obelisk of the Martyrs of August 4th, where a monument evokes the anniversary, became a regular occurrence.
According to the program of the event, exponents of several generations of the Nueva Trova movement, such as Heidi Igualada, Josué Oliva and Tony Ávila, will converge this morning at the foot of the monument.
The troubadours gathered at that historic site will perform songs alluding to the heroes of the homeland on the eve of August 4, declared Guantanamero Martyrs’ Day.
