On Tuesday, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola announced the request to the press after a meeting with the new Legislative Board, which will have to deal with the president’s request.
The meeting of the Amazonian presidents will take place in the Brazilian jungle city of Belém do Pará, and was called by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Peruvian head of State noted.
The meeting will deal with a strategic agenda on the Amazon -the second-largest territory in the South American jungle- where “we have geostrategic interests” and plans for joint development and environmental protection, Otárola noted.
Both countries also have plans for a joint fight against drug trafficking and illegal mining, he added.
The Belém do Para meeting will be held on August 8 and 9 with the aim of revitalizing the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) signed in 1978 and the Leticia Pact of September 2019.
