Dominican Prosecutors, police chiefs, others arrested for corruption

Santo Domingo, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) The Public Ministry of the Dominican Republic today arrested 12 people, including a member of the National Police and a prosecutor involved in a network that received bribes for eliminating criminal records, it was learned today.

That portfolio launched the so-called Operation Gavilán against an organization made up of prosecutors, administrative employees and police dedicated to eliminating official records, in a clear case of corruption.

Authorities from that body carried out raids in the National District and in the provinces of Independencia and San Pedro de Macorís, where the 12 individuals were arrested, including a police officer and employees of the Attorney General’s Office, Diario Libre published.

The network is accused of eliminating criminal records related to drug trafficking, murder, robbery and rape, among other crimes.

According to the Public Ministry, the work of the alleged network benefited hitmen, drug traffickers, accused of sexual and gender violence, among others.

It transpired that the investigative team, led by the General Director of Persecution of the aforementioned Ministry, has several prosecutors under investigation and in the coming days will proceed to request coercive measures against them.

Prosecutors from special units of that portfolio participate in this operation, with the support of the Police and the National Directorate for Drug Control.

During the search, evidence of the aforementioned crimes was seized, such as electronic devices, evidence of bank transfers, firearms, automobiles, cash, and copies of identity cards.

Among the detainees is Pilar Irene Medina, assistant prosecutor for the municipality of Jimaní, province of Independencia, according to her legal representative, Juan de la Rosa.
