According to the Chines Foreign Ministry, the G20 should promote political consensus among countries, fully respecting their different stages and realities of development, and should not obstruct the results of their meetings by introducing geopolitical issues.

“The G20 should encourage the international community to work together and respond actively to climate change in order to increase global confidence and capacities jointly to achieve green, low-carbon and sustainable development,” the Foreign Ministry statement said.

It also rejected reports from some Western media outlets claiming that China backtracked on its position and obstructed the recent meeting in India. “China is a doer in advancing global climate governance,” the Ministry stressed.

It mentioned the plans and projects that China is working on to implement carbon neutrality, the largest clean energy generation system in the world, and reduce energy intensity. It also stressed that the hydroelectric, wind and solar capacities installed in China top the list globally.

The Foreign Ministry commented on the support for other developing countries, mentioned the signing of 43 South-South cooperation agreements on climate response with 38 governments, and the training of 2,000 officials and specialized professional personnel from over 120 nations.

“China has played its role as chair of the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, promoted the conclusion of a balanced declaration, and upheld the vision of harmonious coexistence between man and nature,” the statement pointed out.

The environment ministerial meeting of the G20 countries in India ended last Friday without an agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 in the face of the global climate crisis, thus failing to present notable progress for the next United Nations conference on climate, COP28, to be held in Dubai late this year.
