Argentina rejects UK military maneuvers in Malvinas Islands

Buenos Aires, Aug 2 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine government rejected the maneuvers carried out by the United Kingdom in the Malvinas Islands and reiterated the sovereign rights of this South American country over that territory.

This time it was a new edition of the military exercises called Cape Bayonet, which bring together different forces that are part of the military deployment of the illegal British occupation in the islands, according to a statement issued by the Argentine Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It also assures such actions constitute an unjustified show of force and a deliberate departure from the numerous resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and other organizations.

These documents urge Argentina and the United Kingdom to resume negotiations to find a peaceful and definitive solution to the sovereignty dispute involving both countries.

London’s persistence in carrying out military exercises in the South Atlantic contravenes UN General Assembly resolution 31/49, which invites the parties to refrain from adopting unilateral decisions that involve the introduction of modifications in the situation while the Malvinas are going through the recommended negotiation process, the Foreign Ministry indicates.

The military presence also contradicts Assembly resolution 41/11 which, among other provisions, calls upon States of all other regions to scrupulously respect the South Atlantic region as a zone of peace and cooperation, in particular through the reduction and eventual elimination of their military presence in that region, he adds.
