The Committee, consisting of 21 States Parties to the World Heritage Convention, stated that the Italian Government did not take sufficient measures to protect the world-famous city, which was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The Committee stated that mass tourism, climate change, and reforms threaten the city and damage its structure, which would justify the decision.
A UNESCO press release noted that Venice is facing proven risks and threats that are detrimental to its intrinsic characteristics.
