According to a statement broadcast on the national television network, the coup leaders said that France held a meeting with the General Staff of the Niger National Guard to obtain the necessary political and military authorizations.
Bazoum has been under detention since last Wednesday at the presidential palace by the members of the military coup. General Abdourahamane Tiani, head of the presidential guard, announced on Thursday that he was in charge of the country.
The president of Chad’s military junta, Mahamat Idriss Déby, traveled to the capital with the aim of mediating between the military leading the coup and Bazoum.
Déby confirmed that talks have been held to find all the ways to facilitate a peaceful solution to the crisis.
The European Union announced its support for the measures announced by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in relation to the military coup in Niger. The entity gave an ultimatum of one week to reinstate Bazoum.
A military junta going by the name of National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CLSP) announced last Wednesday on state television the dismissal of Bazoum and the suspension of the institutions, as well as the closure of the borders and the establishment of a curfew. It also stated that any foreign intervention, from wherever its origin, would have disastrous and uncontrollable consequences for the country.
