Journalists condemn aggression in social protests in Peru

Lima, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) The head of the Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP), Zuliana Lainez, on Monday condemned the arrests of journalists, aggression and harassment during the recent protests against President Dina Boluarte.

In statements to Prensa Latina, the leader referred to the cases of reporters, especially those documenting attacks on demonstrators, who had been shot with pellets or beaten, among other aggressive acts.

Lainez pointed out that in the protests from July 19 to 29, journalists were attacked again like in the revolts from December 2022 to March 2023.

The ANP head described as serious that none of those cases has been investigated, nor submitted to Justice. She noted that authorities have done nothing to prevent the repeated incidents; hence, they will likely continue to go unpunished.

The top ANP representative deplored the solution proposed by the Police during the previous wave of protests, so that reporters should stay in a spot, behind the police, with the warning that, if they leave that place, no one would be responsible for what would happen to them.

“Such a protocol was the worst solution, because journalists could not freely move everywhere, instead it must have included the police to refrain from assaulting reporters,” she said.

The ANP chief proposed to deal with the problem by being aware of the responsibilities of police aggression against journalists; otherwise, attacks on reporters will pursue.
