Intensified fight against drug trafficking in Guyana

Georgetown, Jul 31 (Prensa Latina) Members of the Guyana Anti-Narcotics Customs Unit destroyed illicit drugs valued at 2.5 million dollars, most of them seized during the first half of this year, national media reported yesterday.

The operation, which took place at the former Ministry of Housing airstrip, included the destruction of 1009 kilograms of marijuana, according to a press release issued by the entity.

It specified that the narcotics were used as evidence for cases that have since been concluded in the Magistrate’s Court.

According to the official text, so far this year the authority has seized approximately 677 kilograms of narcotics, of which 662 kilograms corresponded to cannabis and 14 to cocaine, 10 grams to hashish and 90 to ecstasy.

Likewise, a total of 30 cases were dealt with, most of them with sentences already handed down, as the unit has placed great emphasis on the areas of highest incidence by collaborating with various agencies, as well as carrying out anti-drug awareness and school prevention campaigns throughout the national territory.

The document highlighted several projects that will facilitate the development of treatment and reintegration of citizens in rehabilitation centers, while the unit remains committed to ensuring a safer country under the One Guyana Initiative, promoted by the government.

To combat drug trafficking, the national agency underscored the importance of international cooperation through collaboration with related entities at the regional level, the statement concluded.
