These festivities were organized, for July 26 to the 30th, to celebrate the Cuban ballet star’s 50 years of life in the prestigious British company.
The public enjoyed a program that included the piece “Apollo” by Georges Balanchine, with Acosta in the leading role alongside Marianela Núñez, prima ballerina of the Royal Ballet of London.
Celine Gittens, a first figure at the Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Lucy Waine, a young dancer at the Birmingham Royal Ballet, accompanied them, as informed by the Cuban company’s Facebook profile.
Scenes of the ballet “Carmen,” in Acosta’s version, performed by dancers from his company and led by Laura Rodriguez and Alejandro Silva, were also presented.
Acosta and Marianela Núñez performed the pas de deux of the white swan of “Swan Lake.”
To close the Cuban dancer’s birthday celebrations, Acosta returned to the stage on the last day, along with dancer Laura Rodríguez to perform “Mermaid,” a duet created by Belgian choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, especially for the awarded first Cuban dancer.
