According to the poll, only 38 percent of respondents rejected the possibility, while four percent avoided answering.
Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert warned recently that Israel is headed towards civil war. “There is a threat. This is a serious threat (…) It has never happened before and now we are entering a civil war,” he said during an interview with British television Channel 4 News.
The tension escalated this week after a vote in the Knesset (Parliament) that eliminated the reasonableness clause, which allowed Israeli justice to review and revoke government decisions. The initiative is key to the reform that Netanyahu is pushing, which would also restrict the ability of the Supreme Court to reject laws by allowing the Knesset to re-legislate regulations challenged by the justice. It would also allow the far-right Executive to control the appointment of magistrates.
The measure was approved with the support of the 64 legislators of the far-right bloc, with no votes against, as the opposition withdrew in full from the chamber in protest.
Multiple sectors of Israel’s society have held massive protests throughout the country since the beginning of the year to denounce the initiative, defended by the right.
Thousands of reservists have already announced their intention to refuse being drafted, causing great concern in the Armed Forces.
