The tremor of magnitude 5 on the Richter scale took place at 20:40 (local time) at a depth of 127 kilometers, at a point located 39.32 kilometers from the community of Macas, the Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School reported.
Users of social media commented that they felt the telluric movement in a “very slight” or “fast” way, even in cities far from the epicenter, such as Portoviejo, in the province of Manabí, or Guayaquil, in Guayas.
According to the Secretariat of Risk Management, it was perceptible in seven provinces.
Authorities, so far, have not informed if there are any human or material damages as a consequence of the earthquake and asked citizens to remain calm and to keep informed by official sources.
The Oceanographic and Antarctic Institute of the Navy, on the other hand, informed that the event does not meet the conditions to generate a tsunami.
Ecuador is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, which concentrates some of the most important subduction zones (sinking of tectonic plates) in the world and is the scene of strong seismic and volcanic activity.
