Angola issued an official statement condemning the coup that occurred on July 26th and demanded the immediate release of President Mohamed Bazoum, family members and collaborators.
The communiqué described the incident as “a serious attack on the constitutional order” and “an unacceptable violation of democratic principles”.
The actions perpetrated by a group of soldiers in Niger violate the principles “on which the legitimacy of the power instituted in 2021 is based, through free and democratic elections,” says the statement, which advocates the achievement of a climate of understanding.
The Angolan government unequivocally expressed its support for the position taken by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) of vehemently condemning the coup.
It also urged ECOWAS to adopt the necessary measures to quickly resume the operation of the legitimate institutions of the State in the Republic of Niger.
