Media representatives from NAM nations gathered in the framework of Shusha 2023 called for fostering cooperation in communication, in response to the agreements of the recent summit held in Baku.
The participants called on Azerbaijan, in its capacity as chair of the Movement, to bring the communication platform initiative to the consultation of member states.
They also recognized the growing role of the media in the modern era and the need for accurate, balanced and honest media coverage.
According to the statement, in addition to strengthening infrastructure, including technology, they stressed the need to obtain and exchange accurate information about the Non-Aligned countries and to promote their culture and values.
At the same time, they recalled the declaration of the Baku Summit of 2019 that rejected the dissemination of discriminatory and distorted information, fake news to mislead audiences about the reality of developing countries.
According to the pronouncement, the use of the press to incite and conduct campaigns against NAM members, especially defamation of religions, culture and symbols, must cease.
The President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, opening the first edition of the Global Media Forum here, hinted to the eventual summoning of the press by the Non-Aligned Movement.
Speaking before more than 250 representatives of 120 media organizations from 50 nations, Aliyev called for greater cooperation with the likely gathering before handing over the NAM chairmanship next year to Uganda.
This First Global Media Forum in Shusha, in the southwestern Nagorno-Karabakh region, was held in the convention hall of the modern Shusha Hotel under the theme of New Media in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
The future of media, new tools of journalism and its role in the digital era, sustainability, as well as effective communication in public administration and the impact on local and international audiences were discussed since Friday.
