“I do not see what would be the reason to change what has been said”, he pointed out after repeated requests by the president she would talk with the representatives of a protest movement that demands her resignation, but on the condition that they give up their political demands and only propose social improvements. Nieto, seen as a center progressive politician, publicly asked her to resign in his message to the Parliament, on the occasion of the anniversary of the national independence.

He added that she should also open on that day “a process of agreed transition that gives back to the people the capacity to decide as way out of this crisis”, when the president’s approval rate is 80 percent.

“She has to end up understanding that she cannot govern the country until 2026 against 80 percent of the people”, he asserted and referred to having told the president that the government has to assume its political responsibility for the deaths during the protests in December 2022 against her ascension to the presidency.

“If she loves Peru, she should assume her political responsibility for the deaths and that the Prime Minister (Alberto Otárola) should assume his direct responsibility for the death of Peruvians,” Nieto stressed.
