The name of the demonstration was given because of the dark and gray context in which criminal structures do not want to release their power, Alida Vicente, from the Indigenous Municipality of Palin, department of Escuintla, expressed in the announcement of the event.
“We believe it is important to state that as a country we need to see a rebirth, in the sense that we need to rebuild a new nation,” she added.
Small mobilizations are no longer enough, but a massive one is required, with clear objectives, not partisan, but in defense of the common good, the organizers stressed.
The march began at 09:00, local time, from Plaza de los Derechos Humanos in front of the Supreme Court of Justice to pass in front of the Constitutional Court, continue along Plaza de la Constitución and the Presidential office to conclude in front of the MP headquarters.
“In this place, symbol of corruption, we will be demanding the end of the interference of the Courts and the respect for the popular decision within the electoral process”, the promoters told the press. They urged all sectors of the population, from different communities, workers and peasants, small landowners, high school students, to see the importance of the current political situation.
They urged the need to unify a single demand for justice, related to the harassment the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has been subjected to, as well as the recent criminalization and persecution of its officials.
The Comite Campesino del Altiplano, the Alcaldia Indigena de Palin, Escuintla department, students from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) and unions are leading the march.
Forces of the MP and the National Civil Police raided last Friday morning the headquarters of the Semilla movement party, a day after they carried out the same operation in the Register of Citizens of the TSE.
Despite the resolution of the CC supporting the process, the Special Prosecutor’s Office against Impunity and the Seventh Court of Criminal Instance continued to try to remove the party with the second highest number of votes from the race.
Several local and international organizations insist on the importance of preserving the official results of the people’s will expressed at the polls on the first round of the presidential elections on June 25, and the celebration of the runoff on August 20.
Bernardo Arévalo, presidential candidate for Semilla, continues his campaign towards the runoff, highlighting his government proposals, in the midst of a possible electoral coup and the incessant harassment against him and his political organization.
In less than a month he will be facing former first lady Sandra Torres, of the Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (National Unity for Hope), who is also touring the country to convince voters.
