The Costa Rican Public Prosecutor’s Office opened the day before an investigation to President Chaves for the alleged crime of influence against the Public Treasury in relation to his trip to Latvia, scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Latvia is the country of origin of the first lady of Costa Rica, Signe Zeikate. Upon hearing the announcement of the prosecutor’s office, the Minister of Communication of Costa Rica, Jorge Rodríguez, explained in a video broadcast to the press by the Presidential House, that President Chaves will hold meetings with the President of Latvia, the Parliament and will visit next Friday the University of Riga.

Previously, the President himself justified his visit as a diplomatic matter, since the President of Latvia is new.

The Chancellery in a press release announced that the head of State met with his Latvian counterpart Edgars Rinkevics at the Riga Palace, seat of government, in a meeting also attended by Chancellor Arnoldo André.

The purpose of this visit is to bring the relationship between the two countries closer, promote cooperation and joint work at the multilateral level, Chaves said in the statement.
