During President Andres Manuel Lpez Obrador’s morning press conference at the National Palace, the director of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) gave a report on the plan, as he does every month.
The plan began in April 2022 after the anxiety created by the Covid-19 pandemic, which revealed the serious problems of the public health system due to the privatization of hospitals, laboratories and the decrease in the training of doctors in universities, which generated a serious deficit of specialists.
As a result, it was necessary to hire foreigners, particularly from Cuba, a country with which a broad collaboration agreement has been signed, through which 710 specialists are already working in Mexico, and there is cooperation in other health areas, such as scientific research and medicines.
Robledo explained that 22 of the country’s 32 states have already joined the plan, since those controlled by the political opposition have not wanted to cooperate or benefit from the project, even though the uninsured people in those states need it because they are helpless and have to go to private health centers.
