Journalist Raul Perez Peña wrote that the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo will remember on that day the event that marked the beginning of the struggle against the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista (1901-1973) on the island, with the leadership of Fidel Castro.
Peña said that this event inspired and revived the dreams of freedom and social justice in Latin American peoples, especially in the Dominican Republic.
That armed action, Peña wrote in his column “Pancarta”, was a symbolic milestone that showed the courage and determination of a group of young revolutionaries.
For that reason, he pointed out, this anniversary constitutes an opportunity to remember the history, the revolutionary ideals and the enduring legacy of those who sacrificed and gave everything for the revolution.
Peña concluded that the activity at the University will be a moment to reflect on the heroic resistance of the brave Cuban people and its significant impact on the Dominican Republic for decades.
Next July 26 will mark the 70th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks in Bayamo, actions led by the then young revolutionary Fidel Castro and his followers.
Although the military action did not end with the success of the revolutionaries, in total disadvantage in terms of number of participants and armaments, it initiated a period of armed struggle that did not end until the defeat of the tyranny, on January 1, 1959. ef/arm/ro/mp
