In the context of the Peoples’ Summit Brussels-2023, in line with the 3rd Summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-CELAC), President Petro pointed out that the chemical reactions in the atmosphere “is showing the accumulation of capital to its highest extent”.
“Capitalism has created a Frankenstein: the climate crisis,” Petro emphasized, while explaining the process of transforming nature into merchandise has changed the chemistry of the atmosphere.
He stressed that the climate crisis is currently major issue for humankind, and in view of this scenario, he stressed the significance of acting immediately before aproaching a tipping point.
The Colombian president called for the union of South American countries to become a region that is a power for life.
“South America can speak today, can act, can link peoples and other Souths, and this unity of the Souths can call the whole humanity because the time for change has come, because without change today there will be no life on Earth”, he stated.
