Egypt warns of environmental crisis, especially in Africa

Abdel-Fattah-El-Sisi
Cairo, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) President of Egypt Abdel Fattah El-Sisi affirmed that climate change is an existential problem for humanity, and called for urgent measures to deal with it.

The President stressed the importance of implementing projects to reduce carbon emissions and facilitate access to renewable energy during a meeting of heads of state and government of the African Union Development Agency held in Kenya.

El-Sisi expressed that the fight against this problem must apply the principles of justice and equity, taking into account the challenge of indebtedness and the high cost of financing.

Africa is one of the continents most affected by climate change and its effects, as observed by the increase in drought and desertification and the growing scarcity of water resources, in view of which he urged the countries of the region to advance economic integration and the construction of critical infrastructure, such as the project to link the navigation between the Mediterranean Sea and Lake Victoria and the land highway between Cairo and Cape Town.

“It is necessary to continue efforts to strengthen the role of the African industrial sector and its participation in global value-added chains,” he said.

He also considered key intensifying efforts with international partners and financial organizations to find effective solutions to address the debt crisis.

The Egyptian Minister of the Environment, Yasmine Fouad, warned about the growing gap in renewable energy projects between rich and less developed countries. “It is necessary to work to facilitate access to effective renewable technology, provide grants and financing on concessional terms to developing nations,” she stressed.
