Colombia and Mexico to deepen new anti-drug policy

Brussels, Jul 17 (Prensa Latina) President Gustavo Petro affirmed that, during the visit to Colombia of his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in September, more effective strategies in the fight against drugs will be deepened.

From Brussels, in the context of the Third Summit of the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (EU-Celac), Petro said it is time to evaluate and propose new strategies, perhaps more effective.

“Mexico and Colombia, which have been profound victims of this type of policy, have every right to meet and that is where we are going,” the head of State said.

Petro also recalled the consequences of “what has been 50 years of the misnamed war on drugs”.

In that sense, he said it has caused “a million deaths, millions of prisoners and a change in the structure of consumption in the United States, now with fentanyl; 100 thousand deaths a year and a very deep democratic destabilization in many countries”.

The high-level meeting between the two presidents was confirmed this morning by Foreign Minister Álvaro Leyva and his Mexican counterpart, Alicia Bárcena, during a meeting where they discussed issues of binational and regional interest.
