China´s Director of the Office of the Central Foreign Affairs Commission Wang Yi reiterated this intention to the EU Foreign Chief Josep Borrell during a brief meeting in Indonesia.
Both diplomats debated on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, which is being taken place in Jakarta.
According to Xinhua news agency, Wang recalled the two sides’ respect for multilateralism, global multipolarity and greater democracy in international relations based on the UN Charter.
Wang supported the EU in the pursuit of strategic independence and in making its own judgments, while urging to find synergies between each other’s development plans and initiatives to work together.
According to the report, Borrel stressed the EU does not back the confrontation of parallel camps and systems, nor does it intend to hinder China´s development.
Concerning Ukraine, Wang reiterated China’s support for a balanced, effective and sustainable European security architecture.
Beijing will continue to promote peace talks and play a constructive role in seeking a political solution to the Ukraine crisis, Wang noted.
