The documents were signed by the foreign ministers of Venezuela, Yván Gil, and Suriname, Albert Ramdin, in the context of the 5th bilateral Meeting of the Political Consultation Mechanism, held at the headquarters of the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Gil wrote on Twitter that a series of agreements were subscribed to expand the route of cooperation between the peoples, “thus marking the relaunch of bilateral relations, based on respect and solidarity.”
Ramdin arrived in Venezuela on Sunday and was received by the Deputy Foreign Minister for the Caribbean, Raúl Li Causi, as well as other Venezuelan officials.
During his stay in Caracas, Ramdin visited the headquarters of the Latin American and Caribbean Economic System (SELA), where he was received by its Permanent Secretary, Clarems Endara, who explained to the guest the prioritized areas of SELA, aimed at economic recovery, social development and digitization, which are meant to respond to the needs of the membership. He also highlighted the need to build a joint work agenda, framed in economic recovery, infrastructure, climate change and productive articulation.
Both officials discussed the challenges that the Caribbean faces and the need to articulate and integrate strategies to respond to the needs of the region, the Foreign Ministry reported.
The Foreign Minister of Suriname outlined the importance of coordinated work with the Caribbean countries in order to promote the integration of the region. He also stressed that Suriname has always had good relations with Venezuela, and commented that they continue to work on consultations on very important regional issues in the Caribbean, but also throughout the hemisphere.
Gil called the visit of his counterpart from Suriname “essential” to strengthen the ties of cooperation and mutual support between both nations.
