Resources earmarked for low-cost housing in South Africa

Pretoria, Jul 11 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Human Settlements set aside more than 167 million rand (about nine million dollars) to build 930 low-cost houses in the Matateile district, Western Cape province.

According to the Mayor of Matatiele, Sonwabile Mngenela, the constructive project will bring dignity to those in need and alleviate the poverty levels prevalent in the region.

We are very happy now that we are going to change the lives of our people in Tsitsong village. I know it is not just Tsitsong, where we are going to build 200 housing units.

In addition, he said, we are going to build 491 in Mehloloaneng, 40 in Pote and also 200 in Maluti.

We also have ongoing a number of other housing projects that are Nyaniso and other villages here in Matateile.

As for the delivery to the beneficiaries, he specified, priority will be given to people with disabilities and the elderly.

It is estimated that more than 1,000 people will be employed during the construction process.

In South Africa, a large part of the population lives in deplorable conditions, with overcrowding and poor sanitary conditions, due to widespread poverty.

The government has been building low-cost housing for years, but the pace of construction is lagging far behind the existing needs.
