The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrex) statement explained that the submarine spent July 5-8 there, which constitutes provocation from the United States, whose political or strategic purposes are unknown.
“The presence there of a nuclear submarine at this time forces to question what is the military purpose of this event in this peaceful region of the world, what target it is directed against and what strategic purpose is it pursuing”, he underlined.
The text recalled that the 33 members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States are signatories of the region’s Declaration as a Zone of Peace, signed in Havana in January 2014.
The US has established more than 70 military bases in the region, with varying degrees of permanence, as a threat to the sovereignty and interests of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples, in addition to other operational forms of military presence. Likewise, US military commanders have made public reference in recent times to the intention of using their military might to secure their ambitions over the natural resources of Latin America and the Caribbean.
Minrex warned about the danger posed by the presence and circulation of nuclear submarines of the US Armed Forces in the nearby Caribbean region while reiterating its rejection to the US military presence in Cuba and its demand for the return of the illegally occupied territory in the province of Guantanamo.
The US military base has occupied that territory of 117 km2 for 121 years, against the will of the Cuban people and as a colonial remnant of the illegitimate military occupation of our country initiated in 1898, after the intervention in the War of Independence of the Cubans against the Spanish colonial power.
