U.S. to finance security programs in Ecuador

Quito, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador and the United States will reach an agreement on July 20 through which the North American country will allocate .1 billion for security programs in the South American nation, local media reported.

In spite of warnings from politicians and citizens about the interference of such an agreement, current Ecuadorian government insisted for reaching the agreement more than a year.

With this $3.1 billion, Ecuador will be able to “update and improve its Armed Forces´ operational capacity”, according to Ecuavisa channel.

In an interview with Ecuavisa, Ecuador´s Defense Minister Luis Lara announced he will be traveling to Washington coming week to sign the “historic” deal.

He also said it will facilitate cybersecurity to improve intelligence and counterintelligence systems, coordination of logistics to face El Niño, and will enable to promote programs to shield the environment and to crack down on illegal mining.

The signing of the agreement took place past June, during a meeting in Quito between the U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Western Hemisphere Affairs Daniel Erikson and Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso.
