Schools remain closed in India due to pelting rains

New Delhi, Jul 10 (Prensa Latina) Incessant rainfall and water logging have led to the closure of schools and the implementation of a work-from-home policy in several cities across India.

With the safety of students and staff in mind, educational institutions have been shut in Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh.

On Monday afternoon, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘extreme rainfall alert’ for five of these states, excluding Uttar Pradesh.

In addition to the week-long heavy rains, IMD warned of risks of major water damage in Himachal Pradesh, where six people died in the last 24 hours in rainfall-related incidents.

Authorities counted some 736 roads, including three national highways, blocked due to landslides and flash floods.

In Uttar Pradesh, 34 people died due to weather-related incidents.

The Ghaziabad government has deployed specialized rescue teams and advised locals not to leave their homes unless necessary.

Reports corroborated heavy rains in the south of the country, where IMD issued an alert for areas of Kerala and Karnataka.
