The volcano, located in the province of Morona Santiago, generated an average of 21 explosions every hour during this weekend, which caused the damming of the river, according to the Geophysical Institute (IG).
The scientific institution also warned that in case of heavy rains, the water could remove the accumulated material and cause mud and debris flows.
This material would flow down the flanks of the volcano and into the adjacent rivers, such as the Upano, putting the infrastructure at risk, according to IG specialists.
The bridge provides service to six thousand vehicles per day and connects agricultural producers, cattle ranchers, traders and tourists in the Ecuadorian Amazon region.
Meanwhile, experts maintain vigilance over the Sangay volcano, one of the most active in Ecuador, which since 2018 is in an eruptive process with noise and ash emission that moves towards the provinces of the Ecuadorian coast, mainly Guayas and Los Rios.
