Both organizations protested the colonialism imposed on Puerto Rico since the invasion on July 25th, 1898, in the context of the Spanish-Cuban-American War.
Several MINH leaders, including co-president Ángel Rodríguez León, burned an American flag in Placita Roosevelt, in the Hato Rey sector of the capital, in what has become a tradition in recent years.
Rodríguez León said that representatives of Communists for Social Change are participating in the event for the second consecutive year, and stressed that “it is not up to us to celebrate the independence of the United States, but to exalt the heroes and martyrs of the struggle waged by Puerto Ricans” for their freedom.
Former MINH President Wilma Reverón Collazo gave a historical account of the struggle of the peoples against colonial domination, Puerto Rico included, which has not achieved its goal after 125 years of struggle and resistance.
The organization of Communist Workers and Students for Social Change carried out another activity in front of the Capitol, at the entrance to Old San Juan, where they placed signs on the statues of US presidents who have visited or passed through Puerto Rico.
“This date is celebrated around the world as one that symbolizes the highest standards of freedom and democracy; it is clear that when they talk about freedom they refer to (the freedom) of a few to exploit the majority”, stated the communist group, which denounced the imposition of the Fiscal Supervision Board in 2016.
In their complaint, communist workers and students for Social Change recounted the barbarism of Washington since it became an empire, including the various invasions and aggressions.
