Within the National Assembly (Parliament), where 15 lawmakers called rebels and led by Yanibel Ábrego separated from the party, they stated in a press release that they would seek other alliances to make CD leader Rómulo Roux fail.
Roux wants to become the president of the Republic in next year’s elections.
Ábrego said that their actions are aimed at saving the party and building an electoral alliance, returning economic progress and social prosperity to the people who deserve it, alluding to the first approaches with Realizando Metas (RM) and supporting its leader and founder, former President Ricardo Martinelli (2009-2014), who also formed the CD.
They stated that with this alternative, the CD membership has expressed its total rejection to the intentions of the current president of the party and the members of the leadership he controls to conduct the party “into a losing alliance with José Isabel Blandón of the Panameñista party.”
After Realizando Metas on June 4 and July 2 and the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) on July 11, the CD will be the third party to hold primary elections, scheduled for Sunday, July 9, but amid differences in its leadership. Founded in 1998, the CD is the second largest party in this country, with 315,207 members. Its proposal has focused on the renewal of political power and the fight against corruption, but distant from the traditional class.
