“I am leaving Port-au-Prince, where I accompanied Antonio Guterres, more convinced than ever of the need to support Haiti with a robust multinational force to work with the Haitian police,” said the UN official after her visit.
She stressed that this is essential to stabilize the situation and clear the way for a democratic transition.
During her stay, DiCarlo visited the headquarters of the National Police and met with its general director, Frantz Elbé, as well as other senior commanders, with whom she discussed security challenges, the needs of the force, as well as the possible support from an international force.
The UN official pointed out that the institution she represents is committed to promote a long-term security environment in Haiti.
DiCarlo accompanied the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, who visited Haiti on Saturday and also encouraged the Security Council to approve the deployment of troops to assist the Police in the face of the current “terrible” security, political and humanitarian crisis.
