New strike in Haiti keeps the capital in the dark

Port-au-Prince, Jul 3 (Prensa Latina) A new strike of employees of the Electricity Company of Haiti (EDH) is keeping the capital and areas of the Center department in the dark.

The workers of the Péligre hydroelectric plant went on strike in demand of the payment of five months of back wages, as confirmed to the press by Pierre Michel Felix, vice president of the Federation of EDH Workers’ Unions, who called on the authorities to satisfy the demands of the strikers as soon as possible and expressed regret for the consequences on the clients.

As explained by the trade unionist, the Government promised to pay two months at the beginning of May and the remaining five at the end of May month, however, only the first of the deadlines was met.

The movement is taking place a month and a half after a similar one that kept the country without electricity for a month.

Last time, the energy crisis and fuel shortages caused a reduction of services even in public hospitals.

The shutdown of electricity services in Haiti is undergoing a serious security, humanitarian, and economic crisis as a result of gang actions in and around Port-au-Prince.
