According to the note released by the entity, the Monthly Economic Activity Indicator (Imacec) suffered a strong contraction, but remained within the specialists’ projections.
In February the decline was half a point; in March the fall reached 1.9 and in April 1.1. In January, the Chilean economy had a slight rebound of 0.4 units.
By sectors, the production of goods decreased by 2.7%, the reduction in mining (-7.5) and, to a lesser extent, by the manufacturing industry and other articles (-0.8).
Trade suffered a decline of 4.2 percentage points, a result explained by lower sales in supermarkets, department stores and specialized clothing and food establishments.
With respect to services, there was no variation because the rise in business and personal services was offset by the fall in transportation.
The Imacec is an estimate made by the Central Bank, which summarizes the activity of the different sectors of the economy in a given month and its variations are an approximation of what the evolution of the national Gross Domestic Product will be.
