Haitian Prosecutor to investigate nationals sentenced by US, Canada

Edler-Guillaume
Port-au-Prince, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) The government commissioner in the Haitian capital, Edler Guillaume, will investigate those nationals sanctioned in the United States, Canada and the Dominican Republic for allegedly promoting corruption and financing gangs, it was reported.

The prosecutor, who took office three weeks ago, told the newspaper Le Nouvelliste that he is very interested in the cases of Haitian personalities punished in those countries; however, he encouraged the nations that adopted the measures to respect the procedures.

To date, those imposing the sanctions have not notified us of their decisions nor have they sent us any documents. We have no material evidence. They cannot proceed in this way, the lawyer stressed.

In order to initiate public proceedings, facts and evidence are needed. “As soon as we have grounds to institute proceedings, whoever is involved will be properly processed,” he assured.

Regarding the case of former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, who was sentenced on charges of embezzling at least 60 million dollars from the Treasury, he said that the investigation is active, even after the end of the examining magistrate’s mandate.

According to the prosecutor, it is up to the dean of the Court of First Instance to appoint a new judge to continue the investigation.
