With funding from the European Union (EU) and in direct coordination with Cuba’s Ministry of Agriculture (Minag), the UN agency favors research and knowledge, the communiqué says.
It added that the objective of the first meeting, held at the Pig Research Institute (IIP), as part of the capacity building program, focused on the approach to research projects is to raise awareness among women and men on gender equality issues from a perspective of equity and rights.
The initiative is part of aware-raising actions of the program Strengthening of the Integrated System of Knowledge Management for Sustainable Food Security in Cuba (Consas), implemented by the Minag (an initiative that is technically assisted by FAO).
The event was attended by Minag’s director of cadres, Julia Muriel Escobar, and the consultant on gender issues, Yanisei Bombino, as well as members of the Consas national coordination team.
According to Muriel Escobar, this action is an important space for reflection and debate on the daily problems of women and men researchers at the IIP, where women make up 32 percent of the work force.
In the research and scientific reserve category, there is numerical parity in the participation of women and men; however, most of women have reached the Master’s degree category, while men have more access to doctoral studies.
