Colombia, Venezuela to launch Integration Commission

Bogota, Jun 30 (Prensa Latina) Colombian and Venezuelan Foreign Minister Alvaro Leyva and Yvan Gil, respectively, on Friday set the Good Neighborliness and Integration Commission between the two countries.

Both nations will seek to promote cooperation and joint development in neighboring areas, following the re-establishment of their political, diplomatic, commercial and economic ties past August when Gustavo Petro took the office.

At the end of the meeting, held at the San Carlos Palace, the two foreign ministers and respective delegations signed several agreements in virtue of strengthening bilateral ties.

“What we are doing today, which is to return to good neighborliness, to integration, to leave behind that mistake, is something that exalts both republics,” said Leyva.

Colombian FM, on the other hand, noted that he was proud of remaking history that has always been “one same family, one same blood, one same struggle, one same Liberator.”

The diplomat decried the encounter as a historic milestone, which will be a world example.

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan minister explained such a Commission “will focus on various aspects: infrastructure, communications, migration, social and energy issues. A daily cooperation at the borders and beyond.”

The Colombia-Venezuela Neighborliness and Integration Commission will address issues related to social and cultural areas, economic development and security, through Binational Technical Committees, in which cooperation and integration of the two countries will be bolstered, giving priority to border areas.
