Light alcohol consumption does not guard against diabetes, obesity

Washington, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) A study found that people who have just one or two drinks per day are not protected from endocrine conditions including obesity and type 2 diabetes, according to the Endocrine Society´s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

No data supported the association between moderate drinking and improved health outcomes in people drinking less than or equal to seven alcoholic beverages per week.

The study comes out amid controversy between those who claim that it is dangerous to overindulge in liquor, but a couple of drinks helps the body, and urge for zero-alcohol theory.

Alcohol consumption annually kills over 3 million people and disabilities to some 50 million people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is working to raise awareness of the physical and psychological damage caused by alcohol consumption.

WHO stressed that alcohol consumption brings risks and consequences, and generates more than 200 physical and mental diseases and disorders.
