Cuba promotes shift in energy matrix to stabilize water supply

Ciego de Avila, Cuba, Jun 29 (Prensa Latina) Shifts of Cuban energy matrix to water pumping stations in remote communities is currently advancing in central Ciego de Avila province to guarantee more stability in supplying and saving energy.

Alier Santiesteban, head specialist of the Aqueduct and Sewage Department in Ciego de Avila, pointed out that the program consists of installing 92 modern pieces of equipment of up to 10 kilowatts of power to pump drinking water using photovoltaic solar energy.

Santiesteban added that although the country’s fuel shortages have delayed the devices’ installation, technicians and experts from several agencies in charge of the task have already replaced 22 units.

The investment will benefit over 45,500 locals, through small solar or hybrid pumping stations. In addition, it will guarantee energy independence, and it will provide energy to the National Electric System in case they are not generating for their specific activity.

According to the coordinator of the program in the provincial government, Hiorvanys Espinosa, at the same time they are working on the maintenance and improvement of the infrastructure of the pumping units, in places where the solar energy ones cannot be located.
