UN special rapporteur says Bolsonaro attacked democracy in Brazil

Brasilia, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Peaceful Assembly and Freedom of Association, Clement Nyaletsossi, on Wednesday condemned that former President Jair Bolsonaro attacked elections and democratic institutions in Brazil.

Presenting the text at the UN Human Rights Council, Nyaletsossi further pointed out that the far-right politician (Bolsonaro) had confessed support for the military regime in Brazil from 1964 to 1985, and had reduced the space for civil society.

According to journalist Jamil Chade, “for the first time explicitly, the document accuses Bolsonaro of attacking Brazilian democracy.”

The briefing does not imply any kind of international sanction against Bolsonaro, but increases foreign pressure and embarrassment on him.

The report may also be helpful as a basis for decisions and arguments in the Brazilian Judiciary. Nyaletsossi visited Brazil in the 1Q 2022 having being in different cities.

The special rapporteur had acknowledged in a briefing Brazil´s crisis and had warned about attacks against civil society. “I´m deeply concerned about the high level of violence against human rights defenders, women, LGBTQI+ communities, “quilombolas” Afro-Brazilians, Afro-Brazilian and indigenous peoples and leaders,” stated the UN representative.

The diplomat urged the administration to ensure that these groups can safely exercise their rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association, without fear of persecution or any kind of discrimination.
