Lack of investment in the face of Uruguay’s water crisis highlighted

Montevideo, Jun 26 (Prensa Latina) The Uruguayan government bet on rain and not on investment in the face of the drought, which led today to the drinking water crisis in Montevideo, according to union leader Federico Kreimerman.

The president of the Obras Sanitarias del Estado (OSE) union told the press that the executive branch has not wanted to spend resources, “but the big works are done by the State”.

He affirmed that the Paso Severino reservoir, the main source of water supply for the capital, has a flow of less than two million cubic meters of water, although its capacity reaches 67 million.

Faced with this situation, OSE is mixing water from the Santa Lucía river with water from the Río de la Plata, which is brackish, and in an increasing proportion from the latter source to maintain the supply.

Kreimerman assured that in the current crisis there are governmental responsibilities, and considered that “the big mistake” of the current administration “was to gamble with the rain” in spite of the warnings of the Uruguayan Institute of Meteorology about the drought.
